Plagiarism, according to the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary, is defined as stealing or passing off the ideas or words of another as your own. It includes using another’s production without crediting the source and presenting as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source. All quotes, work, words, images, ideas, phrases or signatures used in the body of a work, which do not originate from the creator or writer of the work presented, must be properly acknowledged. Acknowledged work must be footnoted, documented or referenced in such a way that the source of the material is clear to the Course Instructor.  In submitting their own work to a Course Instructor, participants understand that they are consenting to having their submissions reviewed for source material that is not documented.

Penalty for Plagiarism

Plagiarism is a serious academic offence. If a participant has presented or submitted material as his or her own, and it is determined not to be his or her own, then the Course Instructor must make a formal report to the Provincial Coordinator immediately regarding this matter. If the participant is found to have violated this plagiarism policy, the participants will be expelled from the course in which the plagiarism has occurred. There will be no refund of course fees for any candidate, in this circumstance. If the course being taken is a requirement of employment with a Board, the participant must apply for the next available course, at their own expense.

A participant can re-apply to take the course they were expelled from, at their own expense. Any subsequent offence of plagiarism, will ban the candidate from ever taking any other OECTA AQ courses.
